Using pcm still gives me an error: 

 ALSA lib pcm.c:1906:(snd_pcm_open_noupdate) Unknown PCM pcm
 ERROR[ogle_audio]: Opening alsa pcm device 'pcm': No such file or
 directory
 FATAL[ogle_audio]: failed opening the alsa audio driver at pcm

I did some poking around with respect to the iec958 setting for alsa. I
have no entry in my /etc/asound.state for iec958. The Ogle FAQ says to
use gnome-alsamixer to toggle iec958 to on. But, since there is no entry
in my asound.state file, I have no way of turning it on via an
alsamixer. Can I add those lines to asound.state manually? Or is this
something that had to have been compiled in my kernel beforehand? From
what I gather, the entries would be these:
