I looked over Xv but didn't get any ideas yet. I'm trying to get the person who gave me the broken laptop to find the bios password so I can check there, but no luck yet either. I guess you followed me correctly -- I have graphics and everything on my external monitor -- it's just that the window where the movie is supposed to play is blank (blue or black depending on my color depth). The window even resizes for different aspect ratios if I select different titles.
