When there is no channel_config specified we ask the sound card driver how many channels are supported and if the driver is broken and reports the wrong number it won't work. Specifying a channel_config forces the card to be opened with that number of channels. The LPCM,AC3,DTS,MPEG chtypes are for outputting those audio types directly via a spdif digital out. /Björn
