ogle on Solaris sparc without libmlib

I've been told that programs that make use of libmlib should gracefully
fall back to not using it if not present.  I've tried this by removeing
SUNWmlib packages and running ogle.  But ogle_vout quits with:

ld.so.1: ogle_vout: fatal: libmlib.so.2: open failed: No such file or
directory

I'm not surprised at this, but I am the ogle package maintainer for ogle,
oglegui at blastwave.org and a bug has been filed regarding this issue
(for the blastwave package).  Is this is the expected behavior because
libmlib is required (not optional)?
