Thanks for helping... But the problem looks more serious...
My computer has actually a dual boot, so i still have an open "Window" on
the dark side of the force (for my "girls" especially). It turns out that on
my XP, the DVD player shows the same symptoms as with Mandrake : able to
read CDs, unable to read DVDs (Video or data) and asking to insert a disk
when i try to explore the DVD. It used to work trouble free before (XP and
Mandrake 8.2)

Looks to me more like a hardware problem... and your support may end here
(unless you are a hardware guru as well). I will resume our exchange once I
have additional infos (just to keep you posted, you deserve that at least)
