It turns out that ogle is not at all to blame. It looks as if upgrading the 
kernel did something to the sound modules. I updated alsaplayer (and 
everything it was dependent on), ran alsaconfig (got a gratifying blast of 
sound out of the speakers) and reinstalled the ogle RPM (.8.3-1). Now ogle 
runs, but badly (pause every four seconds or so), and without any sound. 
Nothing else (besides alsaconfig) can produce any sound, either). 

Here is everthing it produced until I quit. Thanks for any help you can 
provide.
