If it is not working then you need the patch I guess.
According to this thread:

this isn't fixed even in kernel-2.6.7. 
So maybe there needs to be some complaining on
the linux kernel mailing list about this problem so it gets fixed.

Normally you can do 'cat /proc/sys/dev/cdrom/info'
And there on the 'Can read DVD:' line there should be a '1' for the
dvd device.
Can someone confirm that it is set to '1' once you have made
the patch, or maybe the USB devices doesn't show up in that file?
