Slow playback w/ Debian 3.1

Hi all,
I have upgraded an old RedHat 7.2-based system where I had manually 
installed ogle. I now run Debian 3.1 with kernel 2.4.26-1-386.
This kernel does not allow me to enable dma. I have added

options ide-cd dma=1

to /etc/modules.conf and reloaded ide-cd, with no success. What can I do 
to make playback (for video) faster (sound is OK)? How to I enable DMA? 
hdparm -d1 had worked with an ancient kernel that came with RedHat 7.2.
