Dazed and Confused with Deep Data

I am taking a look at deep data (deep_tree.exr and deep_bg.exr). In 
exrdisplay, I pressed the RMB and several rectangles of dots appeared.  
However the data is not in the shape of the tree as I expected.  It is 
just a block of dots.  Can someone clarify how the deep data is to be 
seen and interpreted?
