* the server is not running
* the server and the client doesn't use the same communcation layer
(ip - unix socket)

Using accross a network is not a problem as the client-server communication
could use the ip layer. The problem is using it cross-platform ????
But if you have a connection (serial, telnet, ...) with your hardware, it's
sufficient to have the debugging messages.
