i don`t know exactly what you mean.

so you say, that the --with-extra-... options are not suitable for 
giving the configure scripts the location of such standard includes like 
freetype etc. !?
if that is the case, how do i specify the include directories using the 
configure script ?? (i looked what configure --help said, but i couldn`t 
find a suitable option in there)

concerning the missing symbol i ttried the following:

peter@atg81:~/picogui-0.45/pgserver> cat font/Makefile | grep DRIVER_CFLAGS
DRIVER_CFLAGS =  
-I/home/peter/buildroot-neu/buildroot-oz/output/staging/include/

which is actually the directory i want the build process to look for 
includes .... ???!?
so this seems to me like the symbol is correctly defined .
