I've tried the same, and failed.
Instead, I decided to place some buttons (with size 0) on the widget, and 
attached hotkeys to them.
Now when I press any of those hotkeys, I receive a PG_WP_ACTIVATE for them.

Don't know whether that will be useful for your situation.
