Overview of V4L2

Hi all
    Can anyone give me an overview regarding how V4L2 works and how the V4L2 API s are used?I just know the basics that V4L2 is an Application Programming Interface provided by the Linux Kernel for communicating with video devices lie webcams,TV Tuner cards etc...
