How to cache an optical disk?

Further to my previous question, I like to watch commercial DVDs in the optical drive of my laptop. When I move the laptop around, the DVD turns into a gyroscope and I end up scraping the disk. I'd like a way to tell VLC to cache as much as possible of the optical disk, then spin down the optical disk. Is this possible? Note that the DVD will contain several videos, as well as the menus etc, so it's not just one continuous video/audio stream.
