python start vlc and how to get its status

hi,guys:
  i write a python script that to launch VLC with os.system(),it is no
thing different with the shell command.it works perfect.
but i found that i have no way to get information of playing,such as which
one is playing now,and how long it played?

it make me
 puzzled,can someone point me out? thx!
