DVD lockups?

Hi, I've been banging my head against a problem for quite some time
and I believe it's time to defer to a higher authority.

I'm attempting to stream DVDs using 

vls-0.4.0
vlc-snapshot-20030128
libdvbpsi-0.1.2
libdvdcss-1.2.4
libdvdread-0.9.3

All built by hand with the default options.

I have three systems, all acceptable-but-not-optimal hardware
configurations.  All running (uck) RH8, connected to a 100Mbps LAN
using a single hub.  No other traffic is running over this net.

Cut to the chase: I am streaming DVD-ripped MPEG-2 from one vls to two
vlc-s, and I experience the following: After a seemingly arbitrary
amount of time roughly 1/2 to 2/3 of the way through the stream, each
client decide to hang.  Prior to upgrading to the vlc-snapshot I ran
0.4.6 which would exhibit identical behavior except that the clients
would crap out much earlier in the stream, perhaps within the first
two minutes or so.  Note that each client will freeze at a different
point from all the rest, and at a different point for each video
stream - but each will freeze consistently at the same point in each
stream.  I.E., client A will always freeze just as Venkman gets slimed
in Ghostbusters and right before Jamie Lee Curtis takes off her wig in
Trading Places, while B will always freeze when Egon prods the butler
and Dan Akroyd tries to sell his watch to Bo Diddley.  Et cetera.

The vls is still running however!  If I wait for the Death Spot to pass
before starting the vlc, the stream will run (until I loop back around
again); similarly if I stop a hung client and re-start it will run as
normal.  I have never encountered a stream which will freeze the same
client in two different places (perhaps I'm just not that patient ;)

I do not unfortunately have access to the logs right now - Chinese New
Year has closed the office where the testing is happening.  If required
I'll forward Wednesday-ish.

The video clips, if you're curious, are ripped by simply mounting the
DVD and copying one of the .VOBs from the filesystem.  They run about
20 minutes temporally and 1GB spatially (volumetrically?
informatically!?!? what's the proper adverb?)  Pretty slick, I never
knew DVDs worked that way ;)



What can I do to fix this?  Running smaller clips isn't an option in
this case ;) If it's an issue with vlc I can *perhaps* manifest some
programmers to hack at it... if it's a system tuning issue 'snoproblem
atall, but I'd like some feeback on the proper direction to take if
possible.


On a semi-related note, DOES or DOESN'T vls know how to stream VCDs?
