Problem solved!
It was the setting of the NIC after all.
As soon as I turned off the interrupt moderation rate (The default settings on the Lenovo is 'adaptive') the VLC started streaming without problems.

Are you sure ? Could you directly verify your sender and receiver side  
configurations? Mis-configurations can behave non-intuitively.
