SCOPE:

Sensor networks and sensor-based systems support many applications today =
on the ground. Underwater operations and applications are quite limited b=
y comparison. Most applications refer to remotely controlled submersibles=
 and wide-area data collection systems at a coarse granularity. Underwate=
r sensor networks have many potential applications such a seismic imaging=
 of undersea oil fields as a representative application. Oceanographic re=
search is also based on the advances in underwater data collection system=
s.

There are specific technical aspects to realize underwater applications w=
hich can not be borrowed from the ground-based sensors net research. Radi=
o is not suitable for underwater systems because of extremely limited pro=
pagation. Acoustic telemetry could be used in underwater communication; h=
owever off-the-shelf acoustic modems are not recommended for underwater s=
ensor networks with hundreds of nodes because they were designed for long=
-range and expensive. As the speed of light (radio) is five orders of mag=
nitude higher than the speed of sound, there are fundamental implications=
 of time synchronization and propagation delays for localization. Additio=
nally, existing communication protocols are not designed to deal with lon=
g sleep times and they can not shut down and quickly restart.

The International Workshop on Marine Sensors and Systems, MarSS, brings t=
ogether practitioners and researchers for discussion and work on the emer=
ging aspects pertaining to the new mechanisms for underwater sensor netwo=
rks and applications.

Authors are invited to submit complete unpublished papers, which are not =
under review in any other conference or journal, including, but are not l=

senting original and unpublished work are invited and will be evaluated b=
ased on originality, significance, technical soundness, and clarity of ex=

Authors can upload papers that should not exceed 8 pages (including a 150=
 word abstract, all figures, tables and references) in Springer Verlag LN=
CS format. All papers will be reviewed for technical merit. Detailed form=
atting and submission guidelines is available on the conference website. =
Submissions imply the willingness of at least one author to register, att=
end the conference, and present the paper.
