We know that ffmpeg notices the audio config has changed because it logs a message to tell us. And ffplay handles this change OK. More interesting is that it's only the number of audio channels that changes, from 2 to 6. The bits_per_sample and sample_rate remain constant at 16 and 48000 respectively.
