no sound after machine rebuild & updates

   Long time xine user. Love the program.

   OK, I run a number of Gentoo machines here at home. I've just gone
through a complete update cycle on the lot of them. Two of the
machines (mine and my wife's) normally run xine all the time. After
this recent set of updates we are getting no sound on either machine.
DVD playback is fine for video but no sound. All other apps I've tried
have sound as normal. Only xine is not working so far.

   I'm actually not even sure if there was an actual xine update in
the vast batch of packages that were rebuilt but I suspect that at
least xine-lib was. Here are the current versions and build flags.

   I've tried deleting the .xine directory and letting the current
code set up a new one but no sound. I've tried setting a few audio
options - OSS, auto and alsa drivers. No change.

   I tried rebuilding win32codecs but no relief.

   One thing I have seen is sometime, but not always, xine will
complain when starting the DVD that it requires an unsupported codec -
AC3 - but that sounds very standard to me so I would think it is
supported, somehow...

   I see nothing of much interest in a terminal when I start the
program. I do get the dialog box about the codec.
