xine crashes on launch

When I try to launch xine (either from the menu, or the terminal), the program 
GUI briefly appears (for maybe 1 or 2 seconds) then just crashes or exits.  
When I run it from the terminal, here's what I get.

I'm currently running Vector Linux 5.8 SOHO with the 2.6.20 kernel.  My CPU is 
an AMD64 3300+ and my graphics card an ATI X1950.  I'm also running the 
proprietary ATI driver on XORG version 6.9 .  I compiled xine-lib 1.1.8 and 
xine-ui 0.99.5 on my computer myself.  Any ideas as to what is causing this?
