How to do fullscreen scaling for TV-out?

I have been struggling with Xine for a while now and getting nowhere so
thought I'd ask for some advice. I have a Linux computer (Ubuntu gutsy) with
an nVidia hooked up to an LCD monitor and a TV (with S-Video) as a clone and
I use it to watch video on the TV. The LCD runs at a resolution of
1280X1024, but the TV is a few years old and only displays 800X600 (or
something like that). The problem is that I want to use Xine to watch DVDs
and have them displayed full screen on the TV. However, when I fullscreen
Xine it goes the the LCD monitor full screen so I only see the top left
corner on the TV.


I know this sounds strange, but mplayer does what I am talking about. When I
use mplayer and switch to full screen it automatically goes to the correct
size to be full screen on the TV. (I think this is done by the xv driver.) I
tried to switch to the xv driver in Xine, but no luck. I also went into the
Setup > Video window and change the "Vertical Image Position". This
successfully puts the full screen DVD at the top of the screen and is
perfect for my TV vertically. However, the horizontal dimension is still way
too wide. By "disabling video scaling" I CAN get the whole DVD on the TV
.... but only at a small size - not even half the screen. I feel I am
getting close and think there must be a way to do this since mplayer does
this fullscreen scaling no problem. Can anyone give me some advice on how to
accomplish this?


n.b. In case you are wondering, I am mostly happy with mplayer, but it
throws up some errors from time to time. It seems to dislike playing DVDs,
spewing out frame sync error messages. Xine seems to be more solid, so I
thought I would try using that instead.
