The usual cause of this kind of thing is a broken catalog.cache.

  $ mv ~/.xine/catalog.cache ~/.xine/catalog.cache~

If that works, then both files named in that command are of interest and may
be of help in fixing this problem. (Running any xine-lib front end will cause
catalog.cache to be recreated.)
