It's possible that xine-lib is triggering a bug somewhere else, probably in X
or the kernel. Without bugs elsewhere, it *cannot* cause a system freeze.

Since you'll have started a new X session, /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old may
contain something useful; then again, it may not. If it's really a kernel
problem, then http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=387348 should help, so
long as you have another computer handy and you can network them together
(preferably wired).
