About my pipe streaming problem:

Got it working, I'm now using the "fifo:/" input plugin which I found by sheer luck while browsing the sources.  ;-)

When using the "file:/" input on a pipe, the whole thing goes berzerk, calls wrong plugins or fails to find a suitable demux.
