limited ram, any ways around ?

Dear Sirs,
I tried to play the videos from http://www.3sat.de/scobel (more
specifically the interview with Jean Marie Lehn) on my AMD Sempron computer
with 500 MB RAM + 500 MB swap, Debian testing/unstable, using the binary
gxine
deb, installed from the Debian repository with aptitude. The video images
are of high resolution.
Due, I guess, to the small number of buffers assigned by default, the
playback stopped every 16-17 seconds, a while, for "refueling".
Increasing twenty-fold the number of buffers (beyound that, filling them
seem to take for ever) the interval increased to a more beareable 5.5 min.
Of course the "tanking" time, on my 500Mbit connection increased
accordingly.
Two qustions:
1-In this case, I am not at all interested in the video information. Is
there a way to discard it and use all the buiffers for audio ?
2-Is there a way to dump the stream to the hard disk ? I guess that the
"refueling" of the buffers from the hard disk might be much faster than
from the ADSL line.
