what symlinks did you create?

you should not need to create anything to compile.

I've compiled it on ubuntu without "fixing" anything.

maybe you can have a look at the ubuntu xine lib package to see, if  
there are other packages which are needed, e.g., which might contain  
the devel stuff for cos/sin..
