It is actually quite simple: xine has to be instructed to use the "root" window for the video output, which can be done using the "--root" commandline option. Summarizing: using the "gui.video_display" option in your configuration file (~/.xine/config) and the "--root" commandline option I was finally able to have the Xine controls on my LCD monitor and the video display on my LCD television (of course, with two seperate instances of X running).
