(Hmm, that message is *old*. I mean, XFree86...)

Install the necessary -dev (or -devel) packages and try again. Exactly what
you need is system- or distribution-dependent.

Doing so can affect the results of some tests. Best to run that as a normal
user.

Now *that's* interesting: there's a shell quoting issue there.

You need to set PKG_CONFIG_PATH such that pkg-config looks in
/usr/local/lib/pkgconfig (assuming that xine-lib was installed in
/usr/local).
