Problem when trying to use multiple instances of the xvid encoder

I am working on an application that uses the video-for-windows api. and
the xvid encoder.  The program crashes inside the xvid dll when multiple
threads try to compress using the xvid encoder.  Does the xvid codec
allow for multiple instances of the encoder to be used at the same time?
Or does it allow for multiple threads to compress using a single
instance of the encoder?
