I think it's fair to say that even complete x264 defaults with crf=20 will give you better quality as well as faster encoding than your currently "tuned" xvid settings. Also, I hope you now appreciate how important it is that xvid keeps its API compatibility - there's a lot of people like you who would refuse to relearn things from scratch just because some developer had some crazy idea and broke things that worked.
