DivX compatibility

Is Xvid able to decode divx AVI files without changing the fourcc DIVX to XVID in the file ? I tried with a Win98 PC which never seen divx codec before, and it seems it does not work. Then I cannot play my divx videos writen on a CD with xdiv, although it seems it could if it was registered as divx decoder in windows (I changed the fourcc in several files to verify that).
