compatibility with divx.com

What is the compatibility between XviX and DivX (divx.com)? Any
problems, especially when encoding on one platform and playing on
another?

I'd prefer to use an open source codec, like XviD. However, i also want
to make DivX files that can be played without any problems whatsoever
anywhere, and that's why until now i'm using the DivX.com codec, because
that's what most of the Windows users have installed and i assume
DivX.com would be always compatible with itself (even though i'm
encoding on Linux).
