Generally speaking there is a lot of configuration information.

The main ones - you will be familiar with are

display name/user/domain/password

domain is sometimes called - realm/proxy/server and is assembled in
various ways to form your sip contact address - this is effectively like
an email address

Display Name <user@domain>

The goal is to REGISTER your CONTACT in the SIP REGISTRY with your LAN
IP information so a SIP PROXY can relay SIP MESSAGES to/from you and
INVITE others into a DIALOG SESSION and negotiate SESSION CONNECTION
information like codecs.

Typically the main variable configurations are

Transport - UDP or TCP - you can't use TCP if your server only supports
UDP and v.v.

TLS - security - this is a handshake that occurs over the transport.

Port - usually 5060

If you can register but can't complete a call

Check the TO address - maybe use an ECHO service number to test.

If you can complete a call but can't hear anything

Check pulse audio volume control to see if you're using the correct devices.

Try to deselect some old codecs in the GUI for compatibility.

Remember - you are not alone.

Good luck & Have fun.
