You can directly communicate with any device using SIP protocol[*].
Furthermore, you can use a "bridge" to communicate with other protocols.
For example, businesses often use a SIP <-> PSTN bridge to make and
receive calls on the PSTN.

I advocate direct peer to peer SIP calls using raw IPv6.  Even better,
use an IPv6 crypto meshnet IP, which doesn't change as you move around the
world.  IP4 also works, but is not portable unless it is a private VPN.
SIP addresses in this case looks like:

   "Full Name" <sip:user@[fc3a:d3b6:c680:77a4:acb2:edf4:9b97:433e]>

Peer to Peer calls over a crypto mesh are authenticated and 
end to end encrypted (modulo bugs where older linphone versions have
advertised a clearnet IPv6 to peers instead of Cjdns).

These are saved in your contacts just as easily as a PSTN (telno) 
bridge entry.

[*] Many so called "SIP" phones sold to businesses don't actually do real
SIP, they can only call PSTN via an inhouse or SaaS bridge service. 
This is fraudulent.  The PSTN bridge installation or service is great.
Crippling SIP on the desk phones - not so great.

To test your "SIP" phone, try to call an actual SIP address, which looks
like an email: [email protected]
