Jakob Nielsen's Alertbox for August 11 is now online at:
   http://www.useit.com/alertbox/20030811.html

Summary:
Excessive word count and worthless details are making it harder
for people to extract useful information. The more you say,
the more people tune out your message.

Bruce Tognazzini advocates an architectural view of user interface design.
He wants to get rid of the job title "designer" and have people think of
themselves as interaction architects:

Tog provides a good example in his previous column: how the choice of
memory chips and battery type impacts the user experience of an automatic
sprinkler system. You might have thought of these two component as being
pure engineering decisions, and they might not have been covered in
traditional usability testing (except to check how easy it was to change
the battery).
