AIX has a program called strace, but it has nothing to do with debugging
programs.  I downloaded the GNU strace source, but it does not support
AIX.  I have now built GNU gdb and have run amaya with a breakpoint
at gdk_x_error.  The output is as follows:

I have it working!  The problem only occures when I have the DISPLAY set
to display back on a SOLARIS machine.  There is no problem displaying
on a local display or to a PC running Exceed.  When displaying on a
SOLARIS machine, XListFonts generates the above error the first time it
is called.  If I set gdk_error_warnings to 0 before the call to
XListFonts, gdk_x_error does not terminate Amaya and XListFonts returnes
the correct information.  The many other calls to XListFonts do not call
gdk_x_error.  Note that request_code 51 is 'X_SetFontPath'.  Following is
the change that I made to  amaya/Amaya/thotlib/dialogue/fontconfig.c:
