problem building Amaya under VC++

Hi all,

I am using MS Visual C++ 6.0 sp6 and trying to compile amaya 8.5.  I 
extracted the tar.gz file into c:\src, opened amaya.dsw, and pressed f7 to 
build compilers.exe, and I am getting the following errors:

Cannot start tool.
The operation completed successfully.
Cannot start tool.
Error spawning 'vcspawn.exe'. The build could not be performed.
... [repeats several times except for different config names -- last is
      "Compilers - Win32 Debug"
Compilers.exe - 8 error(s), 0 warning(s)

Does anyone have some idea of what might be going on or how I could begin 
to diagnose it?
