When I did this it ran, but ran Amaya 8.8.3 which is an older version I
had found on the web as a disty and installed. I've checked however and
I had already removed it with yum. Weird.

Which version should I be running with Gnome?

I'd prefer you build the WX version.
If the libwww is not automatically built, you can try "make lbwww"
