I've never used the feature but have just crawled to the manual [1] to
check if I could understand it. I'll try to clear it up it's goal
use-case a bit: maintaining large documents.

Let's start by knowing this isn't useful not applicable to a single
page document (the TOC can be used for that). The idea is that you
have multiple, separate pages with links between them (think:
"chapters"). If the links are created according to the documentation
[1] for the "MakeBook" feature, then you'll be able to assemble the
set of pages into a single volume: a large/huge page containing all
files in the given order. I imagine one will keep on working in the
separate files independently (because it's easier and it also helps
collaboration in a chapter-per-author use-case) and then,
periodically, assemble the whole document ("book") for reviewing or
publishing.

So, this is really a simple yet great feature I wasn't aware of and
which may prove useful in a distant future: whenever I'm able to find
knowledge and time to actually write a book... :-D
