Ugly font antialiasing on Ubuntu Linux

I set Amaya to use the same fonts as my other Linux apps--the DejaVu family. They show up, but they are a lot more washed out than the others. No subpixel smoothing perhaps? I suppose Amaya (or wxWidgets) does their own font smoothing, or perhaps they use a different part of the Ubuntu font system? Is there some way of tweaking it? Thanks, Cay
