Yes there were a few posts (87) in Draft state. But would that matter?
I was not able to import that version of xml (~4Mb) even if I tried later 
on the following day.

However, I worked around the problem by 
1. creating a new blog
2. removing ALL comments from the xml
3. importing the resulting xml (<3Mb) into the new blog in draft state
4. Manualy publish the posts 50 at a time.

I would like to discuss the problem if you like... even though I have move 
on.
