How to control number of posts on homepage

Hi, Please, i got a strange issue I need to fix on my blogger blog. I was newly approved by AdSense and so still testing out the right places to for my ads on my blog. It seems like each time I add and remove AdSense ad units the number of posts on my homepage reduces. From my choice of 20 it is now 9. I have tried severally to fix this to no avail. In Layouts > blog post > number of post on homepage... i imputed 20 but it is not having any effect. I tried checking in HTML for that code line that reads... 'ver homepage post=9' so i could change it to my desired 20 but that line of code does not exist in my HTML at all so I'm at a loss as to what to do. Also, my Ads varnish too often ... its as if the template is unstable Can someone places help me out?
