How to split XML file so I can import old blog to...older blog

I am working to import the contents of my Typepad blog to my old formerly 
abandoned Blogger blog. I have it all in what was at first a TXT file, 
which I converted to XML. But it seems the XML file is too big to import 
(6.3MB), so I downloaded, on the advice of someone on the Blogger Help 
Forum, a file splitter (which was not super easy as I have a mac). But the 
file splitter says the file is one line and I guess it can't be split? Or 
maybe I don't know how to split it?
Does anyone know exactly *how *one splits a too big XML file on a mac, so I 
can eventually import it to my Blogger blog?
