logging reference

Can anyone direct me to a good reference on logging?  

 

I have two questions that I am investigating:

 

1.  How can I mask certain fields, such as passwords, in the logs?  For
what it's worth, these are coming from ant properties.

2.  How can I reduce output from an <ifStep> ?  In the example that I
have seen, the test gets partly through the else section before failing.
The log shows the completed, failed, and notexecuted steps from that
section, but then repeats the entire else section with result
notexecuted.
