It's a case of using ANT 1.8

My original problems stemmed from an incorrect eclipse configuration.
Calling webtest.sh from the command line worked fine.

I'm using no separate ANT installation. Only the libs delivered with webtest.
I will try ANT 1.8 and report any improvements.
