concerning 'big': the largest suite that I have seen so far comprises
around 100'000 tests.

The majority of the test 'code' is xml but the majority of the running
tests are groovy, since with groovy you can create many tests 
dynamically.

However, at this scale, we found these issues to be important:
- avoid duplication
- provide a jump-start-setup for new staff members
- provide good examples
- review and improve test code
- put some effort in nice reporting

all technological choices (xml vs groovy) are really second to that.
