Here's a quick article that may be of use:

The article starts describing highlighting rows in a tabled form, but
finishes off with the recommendation of top-aligned labels.
The supporting evidence was an eye-tracking study (briefly mentioned
in article); top-aligned labels need fewer eye fixations before the
user understands the purpose of the form elements.
Nothing by way of a published study... sorry.
