CHI 2009: Call for Courses, Workshops (July), Papers & Notes (September)

CHI 2008 is only just over, but it's already time to think about courses
and workshops for CHI 2009 -- the deadline is July 18, 2008. And don't
forget that Papers and Notes are due in 3 months, so work on those should
be in progress.

  •   July 18, 2008 - Courses & Workshops
  •   September 19, 2008 - Papers & Notes
  •   October 3, 2008 - Case Studies, Doctoral Consortium, Panels,
      Interactivity, Video Showcase (intent to submit)
  •   October 10, 2008 - Video Showcase (video upload)

COURSES

CHI 2009 will again offer Courses with durations ranging from one to four
1.5-hour sessions as begun at CHI 2006. Courses allow CHI attendees to
extend their knowledge beyond their current community and their current
areas of expertise. Courses can be aimed at a particular community or can
be cross-community; they can be designed for novices or experts.  We
encourage members of all our CHI communities to submit Courses, and we look
forward to a wide variety of submissions. As examples, Courses could:
  •   Provide professional development for practitioners
  •   Provide advanced instruction in CHI-related tools
  •   Create opportunities to learn new techniques for use in research or
      practice
  •   Introduce researchers to emerging areas that will benefit from HCI
      research
  •   Provide an overview of state of the art research or technology areas
  •   Educate CHI communities about other CHI communities
  •   Provide master level classes for experienced CHI attendees

If you are interested in developing a Course, but are unsure of its
suitability for a CHI audience, we would gladly discuss possibilities with
you.

WORKSHOPS

Workshops are a chance for members of a community with common interests to
meet in the context of a focused and interactive discussion. If you are
working in a dynamic or emerging area in HCI, please consider organizing a
workshop. They are an opportunity to move a new field forward and build
community. CHI workshops might address basic research, applied research,
HCI practice, new methodologies, emerging application areas, design
innovations, management and organizational issues, or HCI education. Each
workshop should generate ideas that will give the HCI community a new,
organized way of thinking about the topic or that suggest promising
directions for future research. Some workshops have resulted in edited
books or special issues of journals; you may consider including this goal
in the design of your workshop. Others have created communities that
spawned new, more specialized conferences.

  •   Workshop proposals from potential organizers due: July 18, 2008 using
      PCS submission system
  •   Notification: September 12, 2008
  •   Camera Ready extended abstract due: January 12, 2008
  •   Submission Format: Three page proposal and four page extended
      abstract both in Extended Abstracts format, 250 word call for
      participation, and cover sheet with contact information
  •   At the Conference: One- or two-day session (April 4-5, 2009) with
      15-20 participants
  •   Archives: Extended abstracts; DVD and ACM Digital Library
