Theo, Most banks of this size don't develop their own banking software, but instead buy it from a major vendor. A small/local/community bank may customize some features or parts of the look-and-feel, but their features typically play in their vendor's sandbox. So if a bank offers (for example) online banking, that's typically part of their vendor's offering. The reason is each feature's capabilities and data must integrate with their back-end systems. Small banks that go their own direction -- including cool add-ons to their core systems -- often work with a specialized external integrator to create what's different or new. As you research this with individual banks, consider learning the source(s) of their systems and technology(ies). I believe your focus will shift to, or at least include, the vendors and integrators who create and deliver this. Best, Dan Abelow, President Breakthrough Usability, Inc.
